Follow-up Evaluation of the ‘Promotion 2.0’ – VHS Learning Support at Schools of Vienna

Since 2015, Viennese pupils of the public New Middle Schools (NMS) and Academic Secondary Schools (lower Cycle) have been able to take advantage of free learning assistance courses offered by the VHS Vienna. In this way, the city of Vienna is implementing an educational and social policy initiative that aims to make it easier for children from socially disadvantaged families in particular to participate in education and increase educational equity.

Against the background of positive experiences, the free learning assistance has been successively expanded and further developed in recent years. L&R Social Research conducted a first evaluation in the summer semester 2017and has now been commissioned with a follow-up evaluation 2020+.

Essential cornerstones of the ongoing evaluation are an analysis of the:

  • educational and social policy objectives,
  • participation in the offers and resonance of the target groups and
  • implementation and coordination between the different schools and VHS.

Different methods are used for implementation.

  • Secondary data analysis (VHS project data, school statistics, education reports and studies)
  • Questionnaire survey among students
  • Telephone survey of pupils and parents/guardians
  • Online survey with tutors, teachers and principals of schools
